Hemorrhoids Surgery

Treatment Description

Hemorrhoid surgery is known to be one of the common surgeries that many general and laparoscopic surgery specialists may resort to after the failure of regular medications and other methods (such as altering the quality of food) in ridding the patient of his hemorrhoid.

A hemorrhoid is defined as a group of swollen blood vessels (such as veins) that appear around the anus or in the inner cavity of it (external hemorrhoid) or in the lower rectum (internal hemorrhoid). Hemorrhoids are four stages, vary depending on their severity, while grade 1 and 2 symptoms are slightly discomfort and some pain during abowel movement, grade 3 and 4 hemorrhoids are often more severe and may be associated with bleeding, so the medical intervention is necessary.

Recent medical techniques used in the field of hemorrhoid surgeries have evolved to include methods with fewer complications and thus faster recovery times, but traditional surgery still an option for some surgeons for certain reasons related to the patient's case.

What is the reason to undergo hemorrhoid surgery?

Pre-requisite tests before hemorrhoid surgery

The patient undergoes a series of tests before the hemorrhoid surgery, including:

  • Physical examination to check for pain site.
  • Blood tests.
  • Pregnancy test.

Complications of Hemorrhoid surgery

Although the complications of hemorrhoid are rare but they may occur, including:

  • Urination problems.
  • Fecal incontinence, a long-term and very rare symptom.
  • Problems due to anesthesia include respiratory problems and other allergic reactions.
  • Infection.
  • Bleeding.
  • Pain.

Steps to conduct hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoid surgery can be divided into three stages:

  • Patient preparation:

The patient is asked to stop taking medications such as blood thinners, in addition to herbal supplements to avoid bleeding during and after the surgery, and to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for a week or two before the surgery.

  • During the surgery:

Hemorrhoid surgery includes the following steps:

  1. Anesthetizing the patient (general or local anesthetic).
  2. Making an incision in the anus and removing the hemorrhoid using scissors.
  3. Closing the incision, the surgeon may leave it open depending on the patient's condition and the location of the hemorrhoid.

  • After the surgery

The patient often stays in hospital for one day, and may leave in the same day if the medical team is satisfied with his health condition.

Recovery period

The recovery period for hemorrhoids takes about 3 weeks, during which the patient feels pain in the anal area, so a general and laparoscopic surgeon may prescribe a range of strong types of painkillers.

The most important advice may be given to the patient after the hemorrhoids surgery includes maintaining healthy diet such as fiber-rich foods, besides drinking enough water, in addition to avoiding some bad habits such as straining during bowel movement and avoiding sitting for long periods, besides regular exercises and losing weight (if the patient is obese).

Sitz baths after hemorrhoid surgery may also help relieve pain.

One of the disadvantages of the traditional hemorrhoid surgery is that the patient needs a long time at home, which may be close to a month before returning to work, compared to the new techniques used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, which may take shorter healing periods.
