Professional Background

Dr Bassam F. Akasheh is Currently a Cardiovascular surgeon in the private sector in Amman. Jordan. Having qualified from Guy`s Hospital (University of London) in 1970, Dr. Akasheh Joined the Jordan Armed Forces, Royal Medical Services as an Intern and later continued as a Surgical resident. At the end of his residency, he returned to the UK where he obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1976. Following this he held a position of Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before returning to Jordan. Further training was done with Denton A. Cooley MD. and Associates, at the Texas Heart Institute, St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, Houston Texas in 1980, and later with Aldo Castareda MD. and Associates at The Children`s Hospital, Boston Mass. in 1986. In 1986 he was appointed as chief examiner in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery for the Jordan Medical Boards, Jordan Medical Council. In 1989, Dr. Akasheh became Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and Director of the Queen Alia Heart Institute, Amman, Jordan, Retired from the Royal Medical Services in 1999 with a Rank of Brigadier General At the time Dr. Akasheh Trained and Practiced. there were very few in this specialty in the Middle East, Surgeons had to get involved with the full spectrum of Cardiac Surgery and this has continued in his practice to the present, Dr. Akasheh is a pioneer of Beating Heart Surgery in the Middle East having started this in 1992. He also Pioneered Minimally Invasive Coronary and Valve surgery in The area, as well as Neonatal Heart Surgery, with the first Arterial Switch procedure in 1986. Dr. Akasheh also performed the first successful Heart-Lung transplant in Jordan
